Soft fruits

More and more gardeners are starting to grow soft fruit, going back to growing it, or looking to grow improved varieties. Choosing the right variety can make an enormous difference in terms of yield, flavour and how many pests and diseases you need to combat. We stock a range of Gooseberries, Blackcurrants, Redcurrants, Whitecurrants, Raspberries, Blueberries & Blackberries.


All raspberries  fall into one of the following categories: early, mid-season, late and autumn fruiting depending on when the bulk of their crop is ready for picking. Raspberries produce a first, large flush of fruit – roughly half the total in the first few weeks of fruiting. Thereafter the supply of raspberries reduces. For continuous picking therefore you will need to have some of each type. Raspberries are easy to grow, but they do need good conditions: a rich soil that drains well & is kept moist in dry weather, lots of sun and ideally some shelter from strong wind.

Glen Ample: Glen Ample raspberries are the best and heaviest cropping of the mid-season raspberries. It ripens from the first week of July onwards and is 50% cropped by the end of the third week of July. Glen Ample is spine free with upright canes. The fruiting side growths are also upright and carry relatively few leaves making picking easier.

Malling Jewel: An all-purpose and reliable variety which has been very popular for many years. Growth is compact and flavour is good. Yields medium-sized red fruit in July


Gooseberries are an easy-to-grow soft fruit and they can thrive in many kinds of soil, although they really like a sunny site. They can be grown as bushes or be trained against a wall to take up less space in a small garden – you can even grow gooseberries in containers. There are many varieties of gooseberry to try, from ones that produce tiny, sweet yellow sugary fruits to ones that produce large, red dessert types. Some offer excellent resistance to American gooseberry mildew although they don’t always taste as good. Try growing more than one variety of both dessert and culinary types to extend the picking season.

Hinnonmaki Green & Red: An excellent, very hardy mid-season variety, specifically bred in Finland for hardiness and disease-resistance, bearing consistently prolific crops of large, well flavoured, olive-green fruit. Self-fertile. Ready to pick from late May for cooking and preserving, but larger, with a sweet, aromatic taste, delicious for eating fresh, by mid-July. Eventual height and spread 90cm.

Blackcurrant ‘Ben Lomond’: A high yielding blackcurrant with excellent flavour. For those who live in colder areas and frost pockets, this is the blackcurrant that will deliver reliable yields year in and year out, cropping from late July or early August onwards.

Redcurrant ‘JV Tets’: With large, luscious red fruits in profusion from mid July through to August, which can produce up to 2½kg of fruit in a good season, this plant is a strong contender for other varieties. As this variety is a late fruiting one, it will help you extend your fruiting season. With a superb flavour, sweetly sour and vibrant, it is a great attractor for bees and other pollinating insects. Without training, this plant will spread, but it can be trained to grow on wires or as a cordon.
